Taiwan is a mountainous island home to more than 300 peaks which are at an altitude above 3,000 meters; mountain lovers have affectionately named them “The Hundred Peaks” (百岳). They differ in purpose: some help clarify complicated ideas, some convey new information, and some merely serve as creative descriptions. Similar to how mathematical equations have different solutions, metaphors provide keys to approaching the same answer if the logic is correct. We often neglect metaphors because we forget how ubiquitous they are. From Shakespeare’s famous line “all the world’s a stage” to the cliché “time is money,” metaphors exist not only in poems but also in our daily lives.

I stood in front of a 2K screen in a dimly lit arcade. The gun in my toddler’s hand felt heavy and I had to hold it with both hands. My aunt had a look of doubt.
