by Li Lian When we think of art exhibitions we probably think of something boring. Many people I know don’t go to museums or art galleries because they think they can’ t understand what artists are trying to express and don’t know enough about the background of artworks.

By Marc Anyone can simply walk into a pet shop and make an impulsive purchase for a dog. Those cute furry canines with deep-soulful expressions never cease to tempt potential customers into becoming future dog owners. Responsible dog ownership is, however, a lifetime commitment. There are the costs to think about—the medical bills from vet visits, grooming, dog food, etc. But no, this isn’t a lecture on how to become a perfect dog owner, nor is it a reminder on the immoralities of dog abuse. Instead, it is about the highs and lows with my two pet dogs and my reflections as an owner after a decade of pet care experience.
Latte, my Labrador retriever, is getting on in years. He is turning nine this year, and moves around the house at a slower pace. Just imagine the massive amounts of food these greedy Labradors chomp down every day! However, feeding is only the tip of the iceberg. By Sin Ying
The mere mention of the word ‘feminism’ brings up mostly negative reactions. Images of bra-burning women, angry and irrationally emotional women, or fierce and overly masculine women start popping up in people’s heads. You start thinking of names to call them - feminazis, man-hating b*tches, and more. How is feminism ever going to benefit men, when the concept of feminism only serves to benefit women? Mom smiles brightly while baking a cake for her children on their way home from school. Dad is on his way home too for a perfect meal, with a ribbon tied around a teddy bear for his lovely kids. Women exchange recipes all the time, and kids gather to play soccer with their dads as coaches. The whole neighborhood is friendly. This happiness that everyone aspires to enjoy is often set in a suburb, full of spacious houses with big yards. This is where nearly every middle class family wants to live. However, suburban life is also a fantasy that was invented by Hollywood films and the uniform world of advertising. by Stuart From up on Poppy Hill is an animated film released in 2011 by Studio Ghibli. Set in 1963 Yokohama Japan, the film tells the story of the high-school life of Umi Matsuzaki after the great world wars. At a very young age, Umi loses her father, a sailor killed in the Korean War. And since Umi’s mother is pursuing a degree in the USA, Umi is sent to live with her grandmother and helps to manage her boarding house. A large part of the film deals with Umi’s endeavor to keep intact in her mind the images of her family. This endeavor is manifested not only in her management of the boarding house but also in her participation in renovating the tattered school club center, Quartier Latin. In fact, the renovation of Quartier Latin constitutes another major theme in the film. By joining this plot with Umi’s endeavor, the film deepens the meaning behind the preservation of old buildings on the threshold of a new age
