How the Genocide Happened Between April and June 1994, an estimated eight hundred and fifty thousand Rwandans were killed in a civil war caused by racial hatred. Other estimates claim that the death toll rose to one million. More than twenty percent of Rwanda’s population perished in less than a hundred days. The genocide was triggered by the death of the Rwandan president, Juvénal Habyarimana, whose plane was shot down by a rocket launcher. The president was a Hutu, an ethnic group that opposes the Tutsi government and believes that the Tutsis intended to enslave the Hutus and must be resisted at all costs. The Tutsis are a minority but have held power in the country since Belgian colonization, some say because of their more European appearance. As a result, most of those killed were Tutsis, and most of those who perpetrated the violence were Hutus. But some say it was really the Hutus who attacked the plane, because under such a pretext could they carry out their plan to exterminate the Tutsi community.

Something is ringing. Is that my phone? I grab it and check the time with my blurry eyes. 9:00. Oh boy … my class starts in ten minutes. Hmmm … obviously it’s too late to make it on time, so I better just go back to sleep. I’ll set the alarm for 10:00 and hold it while I sleep; then at least I can show up for the second period. One of my roommates who takes the same class is leaving and saying good-bye. I remember she tried to drag me out of bed because I always beg her to do so. Wait a minute. Did she wake me up or not? Was I just dreaming? Ah well, it’s not important. by Karen Lin
Shoes, clothes, bags, accessories, cosmetics, and more and more! Do you tend to forget about your unpaid phone bill and the miserable experience of eating instant noodles every night when you arrive at a department store’s anniversary sale? And do you already feel guilty because you are carrying so many bags when you leave the sale? If you shop carelessly and then become depressed instead of being satisfied by all the stuff you got, watch out! You may be a confirmed shopaholic. by Katherine Buck
“Guys, I’m going to teach you how to live. Think of me as Yoda, only instead of being little and green, I wear suits and I’m awesome.” –Barney Stinson Recently, at Harvard University, a new masters program was made available. The Institute of Pickup and Seduction Studies offers a whole new outlook on the delicate science of seduction. The program was begun thanks to the unrelenting enthusiasm of Professor Barney Stinson, whose ardent desire to educate new generations has pulled him through when many others would have been daunted by the tremendous task ahead of them. With the help of Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy, and the London Seduction Society, Stinson gathered the support of other colleagues to back this ambitious endeavor. He was appointed Chairman and as head of the institute, Professor Stinson designed a list of courses and seminars which he describes, in a word, as “awesome.” By Tina Chang
Walking tall, stepping on her 5-inch high heels, she carries Gucci’s newest autumn handbag and skims through the crowd with her squinted eyes covered with Maybelline mascara, Bobbi Brown eyeliner, and Anna Sui eye shadow. She is the Princess. Not literally, but close. She does not use the most expensive brands, but she is surely high-maintenance, and the most victimized person is her boyfriend. By Wendy Chen
“I am not stalking, I’m simply investigating” A typical Facebook user spends about twenty minutes a day on this popular online social community, and two thirds of them log in at least once a day. Facebook is so wonderfully interesting in connecting people and providing them with many things to do; one can share his many meaningful thoughts and all the details of his amusing adventures with his ridiculously many friends and even his mom or dad through status updates or photos. He can go around poking girls who he thinks are attractive in hopes of receiving a response from them. He can tag his friends in one of those pointless “write one memory that you and I had together” photos they circulate on the internet to kill time. As people become increasingly absorbed in sharing as many memories as possible with their homies, besties, or just random people they befriended because that’s another way of accumulating friends on Facebook, they become increasingly intrigued by the details on other people’s profiles. An action most would refer to as “stalking.” |
