Imagine yourself drifting in space: your eyes are closing, your breath slowing down, your body relaxing completely. Suddenly you open your eyes and see in front of you about 200 people from three different choruses, 130 members of two orchestras, and six vocalists performing right in front of you. And the music is simply out of this world. This is what I experienced at the National Concert Hall on the ROC Double Tenth National Day. In its 1910 d but, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony required almost a thousand performers on stage - thus its nickname “the Symphony of a Thousand”. Though stage personnel numbered a mere 300 or so in this particular production, it was still a milestone for classical music performance in Taiwan. The National Symphony Orchestra gave a brilliant performance, as did the three choruses. The orchestra, however, was a bit on the meek side, and subject to bullying by the powerful chorus. The orchestra did make a stronger showing than it had in a recent concert, due to a fortification of the brass section. This contributed to making the symphony more Mahlerian in its sharpness and dynamism. |
