By Thanatcha S. Fast fashion is an issue that a wide range of people are not aware of. It is an effect of fast consumption behavior, people who are easily bored and easy to change. Fast fashion uses cheap material and labor to produce a large amount of clothes. But have you ever wondered how it is possible for a store to sell so many clothes so cheaply? The fast fashion industry and its factories produce lots of clothing in a short amount of time to meet consumer demand. But fast consumption has a major effect on the environment. The manufacturing process uses lots of energy and resources as well as toxic chemicals to dye the fabrics. The factories will dump wastewater into the river and produce greenhouse gases into the air. To manufacture clothes, the producers hire factory workers in poor countries such as India to save money. This allows people on the other side of the world to afford cheap clothes but with many consequences. As the price of garments has dropped over the past 20 years, it has allowed consumers to buy more clothes. Today we have five times more clothes than our grandparents had.
But what is the real truth behind this trend? In reality, cheaper garments are possible only because of lowering the cost of production. This consequence has turned out to damage our health and planet. To reduce the harmful effects of fast fashion, several practical steps can be taken. Consumers can make a difference by choosing brands that focus on sustainability and ethical practices. Increasing awareness about the true costs of fast fashion can encourage people to make more eco-friendly buying decisions. It is also crucial to advocate for stricter environmental and labor regulations in the fashion industry to drive real change. Additionally, promoting recycling and upcycling can help create a circular economy, reducing waste and prolonging the life of clothing. Thus, as young adults, it is crucial that we acknowledge both the problems and solutions associated with fast fashion. This industry has caused immense harm to our environment, and it is our responsibility to advocate for and adopt more sustainable and ethical practices in fashion. Recognizing the issue is the first step toward making a change and mitigating the damaging effects of fast fashion on our planet. a
