by Juliet Tzou On October 18 and 19, forward-looking students formed long lines to sign up for the Career Planning and Life Exploration Workshop, an activity sponsored by the NTU Student Counseling Center since 1990 to give students an opportunity to exchange ideas on their lives and futures. The workshop is open to juniors and seniors trying to map out a plan for their futures, or who are just interested in sharing the ups and downs in their lives with their peers. “The students join the workshop mainly to gain a clearer idea of their future profession,” says Ms. Hsu Mei-kuei 許玫瑰, a workshop facilitator. To join the workshop, prospective participants were first required to fill out a four-question survey to give the workshop facilitators some general background on the applicants and their goals in joining the workshop. This was followed up by a 20-minute interview with one of the workshop facilitators. Only those applicants - a total of about 30 - who showed potential for benefiting from the workshop were accepted.
Topics to be covered in the workshop will include getting to know yourself better, career networking, and deciding upon a suitable vocation. Two separate sessions will be offered: the first will run from 2:00-5:00pm on Thursdays, and the second from 6:00-9:00pm Fridays. The workshop will continue through mid-December. Students are told not to expect that the Career Planning and Life Exploration Workshop will provide a single, magic answer to all their questions about their future; the workshop aims, rather, to encourage students to explore various options and to view their future prospects from more than one angle. Though the workshop is a non-credit extracurricular course, each participant is expected to take it seriously. The organizers will also have no patience for Johnnies- and Janes-come- lately - they warn students beforehand that anyone arriving more than ten minutes late for the first meeting will not be allowed to participate in any future discussions and activities! While it’s too late to sign up for this year’s workshops, truly forward-looking students can keep this valuable resource in mind for next year. a
