Located in Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Pingtung, Dan Dan Burger is considered to be more important than traditional Western fast-food chains like McDonald’s or KFC in southern Taiwan. Moreover, the shops of Dan Dan Burger have even become famous tourist attractions in southern Taiwan. With barely any marketing, why is Dan Dan Burger so famous and popular? The perfect combination of Western and Eastern cuisine
Dan Dan Burger is famous for its combination of Eastern and Western cuisine. For example, a typical meal combo might be Western chicken burgers served with Taiwanese thick noodle soup, grain rice congee with pork and fried chicken, and fried pork burgers with corn soup. Additionally, there are lots of unique snacks from different countries. One of its features is fried mochi sticks, which is a fried Taiwanese-style sticky rice cake. The pork Takoyaki is the pork version of Japanese octopus cake with shredded cabbage, bonito flakes, nori powder, and special sauce. People who go to Dan Dan Burger can choose from a variety of different foods and select their favorite combinations. Never-changing intention and price Dan Dan Burger was started in Kaohsiung by a couple. The shop first became a sensation because of its Western fast food business style and its Eastern food. The sales figures gradually grew, and there were more and more people attracted by its special style. Finally, the couple received their first request for franchising the brand. Surprised and worried, the couple decided to refuse the request, afraid that Dan Dan Burger might lose their high quality and low price after being run by strangers. The couple decided to keep their brand unless they found a trustworthy, responsible owner of the second shop. Finally, the couple found a dedicated worker and agreed to be franchised for the first time. This was the origin of the first and second shops of Dan Dan Burger. After that, the couple set four rules for those who want to be shop owners: 1. First, the brand could only be franchised by the couple’s family members or those who were recommended by the shop owners. 2. Second, those who want to apply to be an owner must have worked at the shop for at least two years. 3. Third, the shop owner must know everything about Dan Dan Burger, including how to make sure the restrooms are clean, how the cashiers work, and how to make burgers. 4. Fourth, the new shop owners must have a meeting with the couple at least once a month. Although there were a lot of people who were interested in franchising after the announcement, there were only a few people who were qualified to apply. This was the reason why there were only 43 Dan Dan Burger shops. Moreover, the price of almost all the set meals is below one hundred Taiwanese dollars. The couple tried hard to keep the price affordable for students. Hence, some of the meals and snacks haven’t changed their price for almost 20 years! “I want our delicious food to be tasted by everyone, including students. I hope our food can be a little bliss for all hardworking people!” said the owners. In this digital world, there are no Facebook and social media pages or television commercials for Dan Dan Burger. However, it is definitely one of the most popular fast-food restaurants in Taiwan. It’s the couple’s hard work and perseverance that have contributed to the success of Dan Dan Burger! a
