by Louis Chen DFLL students will have to face reality: on Oct. 16, the DFLL basketball team was narrowly defeated by the Department of Information Engineering 25 to 33. Then on Oct. 17, the DFLL softball team lost to the Department of Information Management 4 to 7, in spite of four runs scored in the last inning. The volleyball team, which played at the same time as the softball team, lost two straight sets 11:15 and 12:15 to the Department of Agriculture. There could be no argument about the teams’ lack of training, lack of sufficient players, and even the lack of rooters. The one good thing you could say about the games is that everybody did their best. With the number of male students in our department this year topping 20 - twice the previous number - men’s basketball is now much more competitive than before. Lin Cheng-da and Tsu Hsu-hua scored most of the 25 points, including four three-pointers. The problem, however, still remained that there were only about six players reasonably skilled at the game, with a mere 10 people to root for them.
The softball team faced an even more serious problem: it had a total of only two women and five men playing. Though both sides agreed to this reduced team size, it meant that resources were spread pretty thin, and made the game a predictable one. And according to a pre-game agreement, the last two “ghost hitters” (i.e. no-shows) should definitely have been counted as outs. As Coach Hung put it, “trying to win this game was trying to do the impossible.” The women’s volleyball match was a close game. Due to the teams’ lack of experience, it was agreed to play a “ball serving game”, i.e. each side was awarded one point for every serve. “The key to winning thus lay in which side was favored by luck,” Coach Chen remarked sardonically. Scoreboard 10/19: The DFLL women’s basketball team smashed the DPH (Department of Public Health) 11 to 2, and the DFLL dodgeball team knocked the DAC (Department of Agricultural Chemistry) 2 to 1. 10/20: The DFLL women’s basketball team wiped out the DAE (Department of Agricultural Extension) 16 to 4. a
