Running late for class, constantly having to meet deadlines, and cramming for exams are all commonplace events in the life of a college student. Furthermore, technology gadgets within our reach only speed up the pace of life. Perhaps it’s time to slow down a bit. Tai chi may be the answer to your problem! The first thing that comes to mind when most people think of tai chi is senior citizens waving their arms in slow motion in the park. However, the fact is that tai chi is now more and more popular among the younger generation. Even people in Western societies have adopted this form of exercise. So if you still think tai chi is old-fashioned and lame, let me tell you how awesome it truly is.
So what is tai chi anyway? Literally, tai chi, or its full name, t’ai chi ch’uan (or taijiquan in Pinyin), means “supreme ultimate boxing,” a kind of martial arts in Chinese culture. However, unlike most martial arts that emphasize speed and strength, tai chi highlights the principle of “neutralizing” your opponent’s force. Tai chi practitioners are taught to meet an oncoming force in a soft manner and to wait until the force exhausts itself, or to redirect it while maintaining physical contact. In Taoist and Confucian philosophy, this method of combat is the quintessence of a balance between yin and yang. Practitioners believe that if two brute forces meet, both sides are bound to absorb the impact to some degree. The spirit of tai chi is to react to external forces in a more peaceful way, while defending oneself at the same time. To achieve such a soft style, tai chi puts emphasis on relaxed muscles and the use of the opponent’s momentum. Each movement must be done in a slow and steady pace and requires coordination as well as relaxation. Also, abdominal breathing is a crucial part of practicing tai chi. It is said that the practice increases the flow of one’s body which in turn enhances internal circulation. Nowadays, tai chi is well known for its numerous health benefits. Medical studies support its effectiveness as an alternative form of therapy. Relaxation and breath control soothe tensed muscles from everyday work. In addition, meditation is an essential practice in tai chi. In so doing, the mind is cleared and the nerves are calmed. Most people feel invigorated after a day of hard work once practicing tai chi. In addition, various studies indicate that practicing tai chi for a certain length of time contributes to longevity. It enhances one’s nervous system and strengthens the bones. Moreover, due to its slow breathing and mild movement, practicing tai chi increases blood flow without burdening the heart. As a result, the exercise strengthens heart functions and reduces the risk of cardiac diseases. However, to achieve such health benefits requires a certain amount of proper practice. Doing it hastily will not produce any beneficial results. Just as in any other kind of sport, practicing tai chi provides a chance to meet new friends and to socialize with others. In addition, since tai chi is a mild form of exercise, people of all ages can enjoy it. Therefore, all family members can take part in it. Another favorable advantage of practicing tai chi is its convenience. Unlike some sports that require a specific field or court, tai chi can be practiced anytime, anywhere. Whether it be a park, a dorm, or even a classroom, as long as you feel like doing it there is no need to worry about the location. There’s no special equipment required either. Just some comfortable clothes and shoes will do the trick. Also, flexibility is another advantage. One can spend a whole morning to gradually apprehend the quintessence of tai chi or a few minutes of practice to invigorate one’s energy, depending on how much time there is. People nowadays lead hasty lifestyles. Though tai chi is not almighty, it can effectively alleviate stress. It allows people to take a break from the work of everyday life and to revitalize the spirit. It also enhances body functions and may lengthen one’s life span.
