by Margarita Lai 賴佳宜 edited by Jose’ Eugenio Borao I’m a Spanish III student; I started studying Spanish a little more than two years ago. In the first two years, we studied mainly grammar using the textbook Espan~ol en directo. We began, as we did when we studied English in junior high school, with verbs: first infinitives, then tenses in the indicative mood - present, future, and the perfect, imperfect and indefinite past tenses. In our second year, we covered the past perfect, conditional, and subjunctive verb forms. Sometimes we read short stories that were simple but interesting. Our instructor taught us some Spanish songs, and each semester we wrote three to four compositions. This year in Spanish III, we study Spanish literature and culture by reading adaptations of famous Spanish literary works, such as The White Deer and The Cross of the Demonby Gustavo Adolfo Be'cquer, and Jose’ Zorrilla’s Don Juan Tenorio, perhaps the most famous Spanish play. They are all very interesting, and not too difficult to get through. I think it’s a good idea for students to take Spanish I in their sophomore year, so they can go on to Spanish II and Spanish III in their junior and senior years at the university. With three years of study, they can get a better idea of Spanish. They can also go to Spain during summer vacation for classes in Spanish language and culture at a university. (The professor can help out with the application process.) In a Spanish speaking environment, you can apply what you have learned in class here in Taiwan to everyday life in Spain.
Last August, I went to Spain and took some courses in Spanish for foreigners at the University of Valladolid, a city northwest of Madrid. I learned a lot from daily living as well as my classes, and progressed quickly. I now have a deep interest in Spanish, and hope to continue learning it the rest of my life. por Margarita Lai; revisado por Jose’ Eugenio Borao Soy una estudiante de Espan~ol III.
