By Chun Hsia Fan Below all the bright halos of brilliant students and famed teachers, a university with a history as long as ours is destined to be full of mysteries and curious incidents. From a place as common as the bunk beds of a random dorm to the Fu Bell and the grave of the first president of NTU, students have had peculiar experiences and strange encounters that science could probably not explain. Those who crossed paths with the unexplainable either shrug it off as a simple hallucination or live with it forever in their mind. Illusions? Pranks? Myths? Over the years, five big mysteries about NTU have been formed. Bored with nothing to do? Want to test your bravery? Read these five myths and test them for yourself. Drunken Moon Lake:
Drunken Moon Lake is one of the most beautiful places in NTU, especially at night. As a result, many lovers go there on dates and create beautiful romantic stories. However, there are always good and bad endings to stories. There was once a girl who committed suicide at the lake when her boyfriend fell in love with another girl and broke up with her. From that day on, a girl in a white outfit has been seen during midnight, pacing back and forth around the lake. However, she never hurts anyone and is completely harmless. Many girls who visit the lake simply use the story of the ghost of the Drunken Moon Lake as a warning to their boyfriends to stay true to them forever. Fu Bell: Apart from the Drunken Moon Lake, NTU has another famous landmark: Fu Bell. It is said that a girl once waited under the bell for her lover at night for a very long time and he never showed up. Being overly disappointed and sad, the girl committed suicide. Afterwards, people said that the ghost of that girl could be seen waiting under the bell. What’s more amazing is that if anyone sees her under the bell, on that particular day, the bell will automatically ring 25 times at midnight. It seems like the bell is reminiscing about the girl; even the bell tolls have a tinge of sadness to it. Fu Shi Nian Garden: Being right next to the main gate entrance of NTU, many people don’t easily notice this place. It’s not exactly a bright big landmark compared to Drunken Moon Lake and Fu Bell, but it isn’t any less important. There are few entrances to the garden, which is actually the grave of NTU’s first president. One can enter the gardens by making two right turns after entering the main gate or by a small entrance by the Gongguan metro station.Freshmen are not advised to go inside and walk around there. It is said that once they enter the garden and skip a class during their first year, they will definitely fail the class they’ve skipped. Perhaps walking into the area draws the attention of the ghost of the first president, therefore punishing them by making them fail if they skip class. Who knows? Shueiyuan Campus area: A few blocks from the main NTU area is the Shueiyuan Campus area. As of now, students go there to fetch their bikes that were dragged away because of illegal parking. It seems to be common knowledge among the students that that particular area is a little strange and makes people uncomfortable. It’s been said that the Shueiyuan Campus area used to be the old address for the Military Defense Hospital. It is said that many years ago at midnight, a girl with a good reputation hung herself on the tree beside the main entrance. She could not stand the shock and hurt when she learned that her boyfriend wanted to break up with her. Ever since that incident, every soldier that stood on watch during midnight would see a head on that tree with an eerie red light, moving and floating around with its eyes looking straight at them. In the end, no one dared to stand on guard during the midnight shift. Shinsheng Building: As of this moment, this particular building is undergoing renovation. This building holds most of the freshmen classes. As a result, it seemed to be a popular place for freshmen undergoing harsh pressure to commit suicide. However, after a particular suicide, an elevator in the building started having accidents: once it plunged straight down from the fifth floor to the first–luckily, no one was hurt. That particular elevator has been strange ever since and even the school decided to seal it up. Rumor has it that a student was haunting the elevator. During renovation that elevator is being removed, but who knows if the new one won’t be haunted? Of course, it is not possible that a university as big and old as ours is limited to only five mysteries. There are at least two versions of every story listed above, some more popular than others. Just recently, a body has been pulled out of Drunken Moon Lake and rumors of ghosts appearing all over the university always makes room for new legends. Creating a scary myth of your own is even possible, but just don’t risk your life doing it. a
