by Mélodie Huynh Did you ever wonder why once you wake up, you have a strange feeling of memory but cannot actually remember? You know it is there, you can still see images of a wonderful place where you felt so free. Our brain is the most mysterious part of the human body. It can create all kind of tricks to make you feel good, exited, scared. But what can gather all these feelings in one night? Dreams! An imaginary world where we go every night, let’s see how the mysterious mechanism of dreaming works! What we call a dream is in fact a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that come in the mind during certain stages of sleep. For centuries, the content and purpose of dreams has still not been clearly understood. However, scientists have speculated about the reasons. Dreams mainly occur in what it is called the rapid-eye movement or REM stage of sleep. At this moment, brain activity is high and can be seen as being awake. REM is characterized by continuous movement of the eyes during sleep. It is divided into several episodes through the night. The first episode is the shortest one with 10 to 12 minutes duration, then the second and third episodes increase from 15 to 20 minutes. At the end of the night it may be as long as 30 to 34 minutes, making it likely that dreams can be a half hour or more in length. What might seem to be a long dream without logic is in fact a series of different episodes.
