by Olga Bessarab It starts with the shrill ring of festive doom.
Jolted out of your tea and biscuits, you shuffle to answer the door, cringing. You are momentarily speechless with horror. There is a mob of children surrounding you, all wearing hideous red hats. They squeal something about being joyous and thankful and embark on a rendition of Joy to the World in a ghastly key. You are sorely tempted to shut the door in their ratty little faces, but you suffer through it, expression unreadable. It could be benevolent tolerance, it could be polite indifference, it could be loathing. The ordeal is over. Flushed with fatigue and aglow with the enforced holiday spirit, you stagger back to your cold tea and biscuits, and pick up the paper with shaking hands. by Mia Jain The sun was almost completely down. Its lingering rays drew wild streaks of orange and pale pink across the western sky and traced golden lines along the roofs of stucco buildings, so that their exteriors looked curiously enameled, despite their apparent age.

Spoiler alert! Did you know that one packet of potato chips is around 500 calories, three small pieces of pineapple tart are equivalent to two large bowls of rice, and worst of all, you have to burn an average of 7700 calories in order to lose 1 kilogram! My sincere apology for ruining your appetite and most probably your festive joy, but I am actually here to help. Recently, I have found a perfect one-week diet plan, and after some minor modifications, I am here to share my secret with you. Unlike normal diets, this amazing one is very healthy, making sure that you consume all the protein and fiber you need daily, and it involves no stomach-growling hunger at all. Not only that, you get to choose what you want to eat, making things easier for the picky ones. Best of all, meals are affordable and easily accessible from all convenience stores. By Louise Devillers > Let’s debunk the Paris myth! Or maybe not… Because Paris under the snow is much more stunning than any Eiffel tower snow globe that you could bring back to your grandma, 百聞不如一見as we say down here!

Ever wondered why your New Year’s resolutions always failed? Come on, we have all been there: Starting the morning with blood-shot eyes and coffee, thinking, “Last night was my final night of playing computer games. I will go to bed early and get enough sleep.” Bargaining with yourself for a bite of lava cake in front of you, “This is the last dessert. I am going on a diet starting tomorrow.” Checking yourself in the mirror after showering and realizing how much money you have wasted on the gym membership you have not used after the first week. We all make a resolution or two at various points in our lives, striving to live a better life. By Andrea Parra Choy
For many people, Santa Claus, decorating a Christmas tree, listening to Carols, going to family reunions, and having big meals and are the symbols and rituals that represent Christmas. Without these things it would not be Christmas for us, but it is not like this for everyone. Even if the holiday is attached to Christianity, it has grown into a cultural phenomenon that is celebrated by non-Christians around the globe. So having 196 countries in the world, and 7 billion people with different traditions and backgrounds, have you ever wondered what makes Christmas celebrations different in every country? For me, a Christmas without homemade desserts is unimaginable. Since childhood, I’ve been baking a lot with my mom during the holiday season. The pleasantly sweet smells never fail to trigger my olfactory memories. Here I would like to share two of my favorite dessert recipes. Make sure your stomach and the cookie jar is empty. Enjoy! Approximately 300 years before the Messiah, the Romans celebrated a festival known as Lupercalia. This festival was celebrated to praise the idols Lupercus and Faunus, representing sex and fertility. Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15th. During the festival, young maidens’ (and perhaps even married women’s) names were written on bits of paper and thrown into a vessel, and every young man (unmarried or married) drew a name. The person whose name he drew would then become his sexual partner for the coming year. BY FÉLIKS CHEANG In this cold winter season people all over the world dream of having a white Christmas (or maybe a white beach in Australia and Brazil!). Beyond these blankets of bright white snow, however, there are white lies as well.
Santa and his reindeer is one old story. But there is another, even taller tale in almost every family, that is, ‘I don’t have a favourite child.’ |
