By Wen Ying Fan Don’t know what to say to that cute girl standing across the street? Can’t find the right words that’ll win the girl next to you on the MRT? A few taps on the keyboard, a couple of clicks and an entire website of pick-up lines is at your service. Suggestive, bewildering, and downright lewd comments are easily mistaken as “humorous” or “witty.” Getting a girl to respond, much less to offer her phone number, isn’t easy; showing basic courtesy and respect and knowing what not to say is a good start.

Beginning of a song by James Taylor Prologue A modern Taiwanese Zhi Nu (Weaver Girl) and Niu Lang (Shepherd Boy) type of tale must begin, where else, at the bookstore. Not just any bookstore, of course, but one of those fancy types with an integrated department store and a shiny, yuppie coffee lounge. Bookstores are commonly known for their extensive range of wisdom, presented in a calm environment. Casual encounters and tete-a-tetes between the shelves? Eyeing games, pick-up lines over the pages of the newest Paolo Coelho? Seem odd to you? To many Taiwanese it doesn’t. The conventional rules of the game of love, as we shall see in the following story, don’t always apply in Taiwan… By Gloria Kuo Getting married is a big step in life, and couples exert all their strength to make their wedding significant and memorable. Since 40 year-old Demi Moore showed up in front of cameras with 25 year-old Ashton Kutcher on her arm, it seems the proverbial cat – the older woman/younger man relationship – is out of the bag. Demi Moore would be the cat – which we call a “cougar” nowadays. A cougar refers to a woman over 40 who aggressively hunts a younger man for a relationship. For young men, she’s totally irresistible – a flesh-and-blood fantasy to fuel and fulfill their deepest, wildest dreams. But what really attracts younger men to older women is the fact that older women know who they are and know what they want. They do not play mind games; they’re direct, confident, and interesting. But what do most of us think, deep down, about this type of relationship? Do we think of “sagging flesh,” “gigolo,” “sugar momma”? Usually, when a 40-something guy dates a 25 year-old girl, there isn’t much said. But if the tables are turned and the older person is a woman, then many would want to pass judgment. |
